Welcome to our projects! This is where we share the work we are doing to help pangolins. You will find information about our research, initiatives, and education programmes. Each project, whether it is finished or still going, is a step towards protecting pangolins. We hope you enjoy learning about our work.
01
Research: Role of pangolins in the emergence of SARS-CoV2 and other viruses in humans
Status: In progress
Collaborator: University of Hong Kong, Danau Girang Field Centre, Elisa Panjang & Lawrence Alan Bansa
Fund: University of Hong Kong
This project aims to investigate the potential role of pangolins in the emergence of SARS-CoV2 and other viruses in humans. By understanding the interactions between pangolins and these viruses, we hope to gain insights that could help prevent future pandemics related to zoonosis, thus protect both human and pangolin populations.
03
Advocacy and Building Capacity: Pangolin Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release (3R) Programme
Status: In progress
Collaborator: Land Empowerment Animals People (LEAP) & Pangolin Aware
Fund: Earthworm Foundation, Save Pangolins
This ongoing initiative focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of pangolins. In collaboration with LEAP, we are not only ensuring that pangolins in distress receive the care they need and are safely returned to their natural habitats, but also working to build capacity among stakeholders involved in pangolin conservation. A key part of this initiative is the development of guidelines and best practices to enhance the effectiveness of pangolin conservation efforts.

Advocacy & Build Capacity & Education Outreach: Sunda pangolin conservation in Sabah, Borneo
Status: In progress
Collaborator: Pangolin Aware & Conservation partners
Fund: Houston Zoo
This ongoing initiative is committed to the conservation of the Sunda pangolin in Sabah, coupled with strong advocacy, capacity-building, and policy influence efforts. We offer a diverse range of activities, from educational workshops and presentations to interactive community sessions. These activities are designed not only to raise public awareness but also to build the skills required for effective conservation action. Additionally, we work closely with policymakers to ensure that pangolin conservation is integrated into local and national strategies. Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to educate, inspire, and empower individuals and organisations to take meaningful steps to protect this unique animals.
02
Research: Whole genome re-sequencing of Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) as a pipeline for conservation interventions
Status: In progress
Collaborator: Oxford University, Danau Girang Field Centre, University of Hong Kong & Elisa Panjang
Fund: National Geographic Explorer, University of Hong Kong
This project involves the whole genome re-sequencing of Sunda pangolins. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the genetic makeup of this species. The insights derived from this research will serve as a valuable resource for developing effective conservation interventions, helping to ensure the survival and well-being of Sunda pangolins.
04
Research: Social science - Traditional knowledge and practices, along with demand for the use of the Sunda pangolin
Status: In progress
Collaborator: Pangolin Aware
Fund: North American Pangolin Consortium (NAPC), Kansas City Zoo
This research project is focused on understanding the current situation of the Sunda pangolin trade in Sabah, Malaysia Borneo. It explores the cultural and traditional importance of pangolins in the area. The study also looks into how people buy and use pangolins, offering valuable information that could help shape conservation efforts in the future. The main aim is to use this understanding to more effectively protect and preserve the Sunda pangolin population.
